John SPINK

# ote: Elizabeth's second husband, John, was a Riding Officer in theCustoms who, before posting to Bay, had been commended for hiswork north of Whitby following the murder of a colleague bysmugglers. Their son, John, obtained a commission in the army,gave notable service as Colonel of the 12th Foot, became aKnight of Hanover and rose to the rank of General. He died in1877 at the age of 94. His half-brother, Marshall Spink, headedthe London business Spink and Son, still associated with medals,coins and fine art. His sister Mary married first Daniel Cole,Master Mariner and owner of the brigantine Dove, and secondRobert Danby, Master Mariner and shipbroker in Cornhill, London.Robert Danby's son, a bank official in London, used to visitRobin Hood's Bay. Another sister, Esther, had a daughter,Elizabeth Prudence, who married Rev. Thornas Jackson, Prebendaryof St. Paul's, and their son was Sir Thomas Sturges Jackson,KCVO, the admiral referred to on page 7 [change?]. A formercaptain of the battleship Colossus, he was "Father" of the Navyat the time of his death at the age of 92 in 1934. Admiral SirThomas Jackson, KCB a Director of Intelligence in WWI, was hisson. Prebendary Jackson's father was Thomas Jackson, son of ablacksmith and smallholder of Sancton near Market Weighton inthe East Riding. Having served his time to carpentry, the boywas attracted to Methodism and local preaching, and is said tohave preached in the Bay chapel. He became Professor of Divinityat the Richmond Theological College and in 1838-9 was Presidentof the Methodist Conference on the centenary of the founding ofthe Society by the Wesley brothers.
