KATHERINE

Day 12

Wednesday 31st July 2002

  • Shopping for supplies in Katherine

  • Meal at a Sports Club at night

  • Camped overnight at Katherine at Springvale Homestead Tourist Park

We setup camp at the Springvale Homestead Tourist Park under a stand of beautiful eucalypt trees. A few metres away from the tents was a lagoon which looked so tranquil and innocent.

We returned to Katherine to do some shopping for supplies and have a general look around. We found an Internet Cafe at an art gallery and checked our email.

While walking around the town looking for somewhere to eat, we were accosted by a drunken local who became very insistent that we give him money. I did some polite swift talking and managed to convince him that we weren't rich tourists. He reluctantly left us and moved on to some unfortunate Japanese tourists. We watched from the local Kentucky Fried Chicken establishment as they tried to reason with him.

The night drew on and we met Ray and Coral. It was decided we would have our night meal at the Sports Club.
Being such a pleasant, warm night, Judy and I decided to walk. It was a lot further from the main street than we thought but we eventually arrived. We all enjoyed the meal but it was then I noticed an itch.
On our way back to the car in the main street, I realized what the itching was caused by - mosquitoes! We had finally reached far enough North to start being affected by them.

Next morning we headed North towards Darwin.
